LESSONS FROM THE COCKPIT: RESILIENCE

Google defines resilience as the capacity to recover from difficulties or the ability of an object to spring back into its original shape. Anaconda’s original plan didn’t even survive its first day. Moose told me during a telephone conversation that when RAZOR 03 got shot down, all eyes turned to him as the director on the floor. He frankly said that he started pulling things out of his ass. His gut instincts were based on decades of operational and tactical experience, though. It took about forty-eight hours to recover from the difficulties encountered atop Takur Ghar, requiring a maximum effort by a lot of agencies to bring Operation Anaconda back to its original objectives.

Anaconda is an excellent example of operational resilience. Tuna’s science project gave my team valuable knowledge they could use to overcome the difficulties of maintaining stacks of airborne fighters and bombers over the Shah-i-Kot Valley. Airpower dropped a lot of bombs on the Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters hiding in the Shah-i-Kot. The maximum airpower effort allowed the Coalition to get back on its feet and back into its original form. British, French, and American strike aircraft hurt bin Laden and the Taliban once we regained our battle rhythm. When we experience difficulties in our lives, we have opportunities to practice resilience. Your resilience to hard times and the reshaping of your life builds the kind of character and expertise you can gain only from passing through the Refiner’s Fire.
